Altrincham, one of the best Non-League sides in the country, provided stern opposition for United and it was not until the very end of the first half that the first goal came. A dangerous cross from the left was turned behind for a corner. The corner was taken by Dylan Kerr, but was only partially cleared as far as Carl Shutt who received the ball on the right of the area. His aim was true and his angled chip passed above a crowded goalmouth into the far side of the net. Ten seconds later the referee blew for half-time. Trialist Chris Piper replaced Vince Hilaire at Outside Right after fifty-nine minutes, but could not repeat his goalscoring in his previous game. Peter Maguire replaced John Pearson at Centre Forward a minute later. Eddie Murray equalized for Altrincham after seventy-five minutes with a powerful angled drive. Michael Knop, Len Curtis and Paul Watson remained unused on the Leeds bench.
